Elizabeth Warren to Keynote Rockingham County Democrats’ Clambake on May 18 in Portsmouth

Portsmouth – Senator Elizabeth Warren will be the keynote speaker at the Rockingham County Democrats’ Clambake on Saturday, May 18, at the Elks Club in Portsmouth.  Doors open at 6:00 pm.

“We’re thrilled to have Elizabeth Warren as the keynote speaker at our annual Clambake,” said Larry Drake, Chairperson of the Rockingham County Democratic Committee.  “We expect her speech to inspire us to work hard for a big Democratic victory at the polls in November 2020.”

Other Democrats scheduled to speak include Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives Steve Shurtleff; State Senator Jon Morgan of Brentwood; State Representative Tom Loughman of Hampton, speaking on behalf of the New Hampshire Young Democrats; and Noah Penasack, Vice Chair of the New Hampshire High School Democrats.  Raymond Buckley, Chairperson of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, will be the master of ceremonies.

Tom St.Martin of Candia and Nick Pangaro of Hampstead will be awarded the Norman and Anita Freedman Award, to recognize their work in building the social media capacity of the Rockingham County Democrats.

Tickets have completely sold out.  No tickets will be sold at the door.

Here is background information on keynote speaker Elizabeth Warren.

Elizabeth grew up on the ragged edge of the middle class in Oklahoma and became a teacher, a law professor, and a US Senator because America invested in kids like her.

When Elizabeth was twelve, her dad suffered a heart attack and was out of work.  They were about an inch away from losing their home, when her mom got a minimum wage job that saved their home, and saved their family.

Elizabeth graduated from a commuter college in Texas that cost $50 a semester, and she started teaching children with special needs at a public elementary school.  Her daughter Amelia was born when Elizabeth was 22.

When Amelia turned two, Elizabeth enrolled in a public law school that cost $450 a semester.  Three years later, she graduated at eight months pregnant with her son Alex.  She soon returned to teaching.

Elizabeth was a law professor for more than 30 years and is one of the nation’s top experts on the financial pressures facing middle-class families.

During the 2008 financial crisis, Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid asked Elizabeth to serve as Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel to provide some oversight of the Wall Street bailout.

Elizabeth is widely credited for the original thinking, political courage, and relentless persistence that led to the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  As an assistant to President Barack Obama and special advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury, she led the establishment of the consumer agency.

Wall Street didn’t want Elizabeth – the agency’s biggest champion – to run the CFPB.  After Senate Republicans vowed to block Elizabeth’s nomination, Elizabeth ran for the U.S. Senate.  She has served as Massachusetts’s Senior Senator since 2013.

Elizabeth and her husband Bruce have been married for 38 years.  They have three grandchildren and a golden retriever named Bailey.

CANDIDATE APPEARANCES

The Rockingham County Democratic Committee must remain neutral in all Democratic Party primary contests.  As a service to Rockingham County Democrats, I am listing public events being held in Rockingham County.  This includes events of announced candidates as well as of those exploring a run for the Democratic nomination in New Hampshire’s First-In-The-Nation Presidential Primary.  This communication does not imply an endorsement or favoritism of any kind to any Democratic candidates actively engaged in competitive primary contests.  I rely on the candidates’ campaign staff to provide me this information in a timely manner.
